GREED

By N P Mohapatra

God has given one mouth and two hands to everybody so that everybody can generate income with two hands but he can eat with one mouth. Imagine what would have been the condition if God would have given one hand ,two mouths and two bellies and so on? The repercussions would have been disastrous. In other words, the message of nature is very clear that the mother Earth has given enough for everybody. The nature takes care of everybody’s needs but one’s wants are unlimited. The man goes on accumulating and thinks about accumulation only all the time, consciously or subconsciously. He does not know what to do with the accumulations in the true sense . Without the knowledge of usefulness of accumulation he goes on accumulating and when he does so by hook or by crook, it is called `Greed’. The intense attraction of incentives rise so many unworthy wants and man does not think twice to resort to unholy, unjustified and illegal works or karma. In Upanishad, it is told that as you sow, so you reap. In other words, whatever action you take , it is bound to have some result some day. We might say that why people are not suffering now who are in the process of accumulating and hoarding in unscrupulous way. The answer is that there are two types if results of karma- Sanchit (Savings) and Prarabdh (Receivables). In other words, if somebody is enjoying at this point of time ,not because he has done some wonderful things now, but because he had done an excellent job in his past or in his previous birth. Time is limitless and eternal. If anybody is doing a good job and he is not getting his reward immediately, this means that his dues are receivable either after some time or in the long run or in the next birth. But for every action there has to be an equal and opposite reaction and that is the truth. Therefore, if our action is Induced by ulterior motives to fulfill personal greed, this may lead to reactions, which may be full of sorrows and sufferings in the long run. There are some people, who go on piling old shoes, bags and many junks of which they do not know as to what to do with. In this context it may be said that the Greed's are the ‘best’ junk collectors. We are not able to separate that immediate requirements of our lifestyle and we presume that everything that was required yesterday will also be required tomorrow. We go on accumulating junk articles in addition to required articles and over a period of time, we are not able to differentiate the junk and the good one. This is also true for junk thoughts and good thoughts. It is not that our requirement induces such type of accumulation; it is greed for acquiring/accumulating that induces to go on collecting such materials. If one can get rid of greed or at least can minimize his tendency to accumulate and accumulate, he will be free from sorrows, sufferings and desires.
