Anger - the Biggest Enemy of Self

NP Mohapatra

It is said that anger is the first ever enemy of human being .In the ancient literature it has been told that 'Krodhat Bhabati sammoham, sammohat smruti bibramaha, smruti bhransat budhi nassa, budhi nassat pranasyati.’ Meaning thereby the anger reduces the knowledge level of human being as a result of which the wisdom is destroyed. When wisdom is destroyed, the intelligence is destroyed and when intelligence is destroyed the human being is destroyed. Therefore, it is essential that we control our anger irrespective of the circumstances. Anger is one of the six enemies of human being i.e. Kaama, Karodha, Lobha, Moha, Madh and Mascharya. If these enemies of human being come together in any individual, society or organisation, it is bound to generate fear in the organisation or the institution or the country. And fear generates lies. When fear, lie, power and lust get combined ,in an abnormal situation, the combination starts self-destruction. It is essential, therefore, that every human being should try to control his or her anger.

Basically, anger starts not with others but with oneself. Self -hate is the basis of anger. Self- hate can be generated because of various internal as well as external reasons. It generates negative thoughts such as ‘ I am not good, I am not loveable, I do not belong to the community, I am biased, I am shameful, "etc. When such complexes continue to haunt human being it degenerates the self-esteem and when self-esteem is degenerated, the pride, self - empowerment and self-respect also deteriorates. When self-respect deteriorates ,we stop treating others with respect. Treating others with respect should not be seen as a weakness but as a strong virtue. Respect is never demanded but it is always commanded. Respect does not flow out of the barrel of the gun rather respect flows from the inner fountain of the heart. Therefore, we must try to learn how to respect the human being irrespective of his caste, creed, colour and religion. Take the example of a small child. If you disrespect him, he will retort back and you cajole him with love and affection he will mingle with you. This is applicable to every human being irrespective of age, at any point of time, at any place irrespective of Sthan, Kaal and patra .(Rig Veda).

There are various ways to control one's anger. The first step towards controlling anger is to stop criticizing others and stop enjoying at other's cost because it hurts one's self-respect. Second, one should not make fun of others. It tarnishes one's self-image. Third, one should not insult another individual. It hurts the sentiments and creates hatred and negative vibration. One should not ignore others' views because every thought is having its own merits. 'Those are the blessed, who are good listeners." Last but not the least, one should treat others with respect even enemy, because ,according Upnishdas, it is ultimately the control of anger, which decides the course of action, and thus, decides one's destiny.
